a devastating series of explosions at the finish line of the boston marathon. a joint investigation underway doing all they can to find out who responsible. avon >> reporter: a difficult morning in boston. one of many difficult mornings to come. residents will put on a brave face and head to work, after their city was rocked by bombs. this morning, the city of boston is on high alert, 24 hours after terror, thousand celebrating patriots day, when a few yards from the anybody line at 2:50 p.m. tbs first bomb explodes. -- the first bomb explodes. chaos ip ensued, amid the white

smoke. three people were killed, including an 8-year-old boy, hundreds injured. >> i saw a few casualties coming back. i saw one guy, his legs gone at the knees, ankles and feet missing. shrapnel on the side of the head and other things. >> reporter: the bombs went off 4 hours after the start of the race, 50-100-yard apart. first responders rushed to the scene and hospitals mobilized. victims were transported by wheelchairs and stretchers. the scene looked like a war zone. president obama was notified within minutes. he promised action. >> i'm supremely confident boss tonians will pull together and work together and the american people will be with them every step of the way.

500,000, that's approximately how many people lined the marathon route each year. 25,000, how many are up in the race. usually -- how many run in the race. it's being shadowed by a deadly attack. the striders sent a numb of runners to the marathon. the group crossed the finish line before the explosions took place, luckily no up with in the group was injured but all heavily rattled. the runners spoke with us via skype from the hotel room. those runners plan to fly back today and tomorrow, they will
